Every few months a new report comes out showing the rapid adoption of smartphones, and the decline of their ordinary mobile counterparts.

The latest report was issued Monday by the Pew Research Center as part of its Internet Project, which has been chronicling the rapid changes the Internet and technology have brought to society. After interviewing 2,277 adult Americans, Pew found that while 83 percent of them owned a mobile phone of some kind, 42 percent of those people have a smartphone.

A study last year by the Nielsen research company found that 21 percent of mobile phone owners had a smartphone.

The Pew report also found that 87 percent of the smartphone owners surveyed used their device to access the Web or e-mail at least once a day. And 25 percent said they go online on their smartphone more than they do with a regular computer — a trend that will most likely continue as wireless technologies become faster and more reliable.

The Pew report said almost 40 percent of mobile phone owners had smartphones that run the most popular operating systems, including iPhone iOS, BlackBerry, Google Android, Windows Phone 7 or the Palm operating system.

The report is part of a series of surveys that Pew said were conducted in April and May.
