Manchester United started their defense of the English Premier League title with a 2-1 away win at West Bromwich Albion Sunday.
The victory was secured by an 81st minute own goal as Ashley Young's dangerous low cross took a double deflection, with the unfortunate Steven Reid getting the final touch to divert it into the net.
Wayne Rooney had put United ahead in the 13th minute but WBA's new signing Shane Long equalized in the 36th.
His low shot looked to be more in hope than expectation but it eluded a mistimed dive by David De Gea and found the far corner of the net.
Close season signing De Gea, criticized for his performance in United's 3-2 Community Shield win over Manchester City last weekend, endured another unhappy afternoon.

United also lost Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic to injury to further take the gloss off their opening victory.
England international central defender Ferdinand is set to be ruled out for six weeks with a hamstring injury, while Vidic will have tests Monday.
Before the match the club announced that young Brazilian right back Rafael da Silva was out for at least 10 weeks after sustaining a dislocated shoulder in training.
With Rooney prominent, they had made a fast start at The Hawthorns, the England striker receiving a pass from man of the match Young before scoring with a low shot.
It presaged a period of United domination of possession and they looked set for a comfortable win until De Gea's blunder gave WBA encouragement.
United manager Alex Ferguson admitted that after the setback his team had been knocked out of their stride.
"David should have done better (with the goal) but he lost a bit of concentration," he told Sky Sports.
"He took a bit of battering in the second half so it was good experience for him.
"I said to him 'welcome to England', he added.
Earlier, last season's runners-up Chelsea were held to a goalless draw at Stoke in a match of few chances.
It proved a frustrating afternoon for new manager Andre Villas-Boas, who preferred Fernando Torres ahead of Didier Drogba in his starting line-up.
Their best chances came after Torres was joined on the pitch by Drogba and fellow substitute Nicolas Anelka, but found home goalkeeper Asmir Begovic in fine form.
His best save saw him touch an Anelka effort on to the woodwork, while Chelsea thought they had a penalty when Frank Lampard went down under challenge from Marc Wilson.
